Claremont / Elmwood

Neighborhood Guide

Claremont and its close neighbor Elmwood are charming neighborhoods on the Oakland-Berkely border.

Elmwood emerged following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake as a streetcar suburb. Its first homes, modest to large Brown Shingle, Arts and Crafts, and Colonial Revival bungalows, were built along tree-lined streets.

Today, Elmwood's residents cherish the neighborhood's small-town character, evident in its vibrant commercial corridor on College Avenue, where locally owned shops and restaurants cater to a diverse community.

Out and about in Claremont / Elmwood

Any discussion of the Claremont neighborhood typically starts with the world-famous Claremont Hotel, where hotel guests and visitors alike can soak in world-class views at Limewood Bar after a hard day at work (or perhaps a day at the spa).

On the main retail thoroughfare, College Avenue, the lines blur between North Rockridge, Claremont, and Elmwood.

Sample one of Boichik’s award-winning Bagels or a pastry from La Farine as you stroll along College with your Philz Coffee.

Or if you prefer a more local brew, there’s always Souvenir, or Timeless as you get closer to the center of Elmwood.

Baker and Commons is one of our favorite lunch spots in the area - we love the old-timey soda fountain vibe.

For dinner, there’s longtime mainstays La Mediterranee or Gordo Tacos or perhaps a newer pizzeria like State Flour. And for dessert, you’ll have no shortage of options to choose from with Humphry Slocombe’s amazing ice cream.
